Located 22 km from Nainital at an altitude of 1375m, Bhimtal is named after Bhima, one of the important character int he epic Maharbharata. The town is known for its beautiful lake which is the largest in Nainital district. Bhimtal is the ancient place mentioned in the Hindu epic Mahabharata where Bhima built a huge lake to provide water during the banishment of the Pandavas into the forest.
