  6. Day 6 Port Blair

Neil To Port Blair, Cellular Jail Day Visit. CHIDIYATAPU: BIOLOGICAL PARK &BEACH,

    Neil to Port Blair

    Cellular Jail:-
The cellular jail, now a National Memorial, is the symbolic of the hardship faced by the Indians in their Endeavour to attain freedom from their colonial rulers. One of the most splendid structures builds by the British era and has witnessed some of the most brutal excesses of the British colonial history.
The construction of Cellular Jail building started in 1893 using prisoners as construction labour and was completed by 1906.
It is a massive three-storied structure, shaped like spoke of wheel, the Cellular jail was constructed with seven wings of unequal length radiating from central watch tower. Initially it had 663 cells but later 30 more were added. The design was such that no communication of any kind could be possible between the prisoners, be it in the same wing or different wings. The jail, acquired the name- ‘cellular’ because it is entirely made up of individual cells for the solitary confinement of the prisoners.
Large no of Freedom fighters from different proclaimed anti-British activities ended up in the Cellular jail; Savarkar Brothers, Hotilal Verma, Babu Ram Hari, Pandit Premanand, Ladha Ram, Ullaskar Dutt, Barindra Kumar Ghosh, Indu Bhushan Roy, Prithivi Singh Azad are few the well known ones. The torture in the jail was beyond human endurance and an ordinary non-compliance attached punishment with fetters and floggings. The freedom fighters defied the jail officials and resorted to mass hunger strikes. As a result the Government decided to close down the panel settlement and all the political prisoners of the Cellular Jail were repatriated to their respective state in mainland India by January 1938.
The Japanese occupied these islands during the Second World War. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose visited the islands as Head of the Provisional Government India. During his three days on the islands, he also visited the Cellular Jail.
The Cellular Jail was declared a National Memorial on 11th February 1979. It also houses a museum exhibiting very old photographs and literature associated with the history of the Memorial.
Note: Incase Light and Sound show at Cellular Jail is called-off due to weather and maintenance conditions, efforts will be made to arrange for alternate sightseeing and also to arrange for the show at some other time during the itinerary, only if time permits.
