Day 1 Phuentsholing
Arrival at Bagdogra Airport/ NJP Station to Phuntsholing
Upon your arrival at Bagdogra Airport, you will be warmly received by our professional driver, who will assist you with your luggage and begin your memorable journey towards the Kingdom of Bhutan. Leaving the bustling plains of West Bengal behind, the drive takes you through charming tea gardens, small villages, dense forests, and picturesque countryside before reaching the Indo-Bhutan border town of Phuntsholing. The journey usually takes around four to five hours, depending on road and traffic conditions.
Phuntsholing serves as Bhutan’s commercial gateway and is the only town where Bhutanese and Indian cultures blend seamlessly. Unlike the quiet mountain towns further inside Bhutan, Phuntsholing offers a lively atmosphere with bustling markets and vibrant streets.
After checking into your hotel and taking some time to relax, you may visit the beautiful Zangto Pelri Lhakhang, a peaceful temple dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava. Surrounded by manicured gardens and prayer wheels, the temple offers a serene environment where local devotees gather for evening prayers. In the evening, you may enjoy a leisurely walk through the local market before returning to your hotel for your first overnight stay in Bhutan. -
Day 2 Thimphu
Phuntsholing to Thimphu
After breakfast, drive to immigration office and your guide will assist you with the necessary immigration formalities before beginning your scenic drive towards Bhutan’s capital city, Thimphu. As you ascend into the Himalayas, the landscape transforms dramatically from subtropical forests into cool pine-covered mountains. The winding mountain roads offer spectacular views of deep valleys, cascading waterfalls, rivers, prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and traditional Bhutanese villages nestled along the hillsides.
Along the way, several scenic viewpoints provide excellent opportunities for photography and short breaks. You will pass through Gedu and Chukha, where Bhutan’s famous hydropower projects contribute significantly to the country’s economy. The drive itself is one of the highlights of the tour, showcasing Bhutan’s untouched landscapes and pristine environment.
Upon arrival in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, you will check into your hotel and have some time to relax. Despite being the nation’s largest city, Thimphu retains a peaceful atmosphere, with no traffic lights and architecture that beautifully reflects Bhutanese traditions. During the evening, you may stroll along Norzin Lam, the city’s main street, where handicraft shops, cafés, restaurants, and boutiques offer a glimpse into modern Bhutanese life. Clock Tower Square is another pleasant place to spend the evening while observing local life and enjoying the cool mountain air. -
Day 3 Punakha
Thimphu Sightseeing and drive to Punakha
Following breakfast, the day begins with a comprehensive exploration of Bhutan’s fascinating capital.
Your first visit is to the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world. Standing over fifty metres tall atop a hill overlooking the Thimphu Valley, the golden statue symbolizes peace and prosperity. The panoramic views of the valley below are breathtaking and provide excellent opportunities for photography.
The journey continues to the Memorial Chorten, one of Bhutan’s most revered religious monuments. Here, you will witness local people circumambulating the stupa while chanting prayers and spinning prayer wheels, offering an authentic insight into Bhutan’s deeply spiritual culture.
You will also visit the National Folk Heritage Museum, where traditional Bhutanese homes, farming tools, household items, and exhibits provide a fascinating understanding of rural Bhutanese life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Next, you will visit the Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s unique national animal, the Takin, a rare species found only in the eastern Himalayas. According to local legend, this unusual animal was created by the famous Buddhist saint Drukpa Kunley.
Before leaving Thimphu, you may also experience Bhutanese traditions at Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum where visitors can try traditional archery, wear Bhutanese national dress, taste local delicacies, and learn about Bhutanese customs.
After lunch, you will begin your journey towards Punakha. The drive crosses the breathtaking Dochula Pass at an altitude of approximately 3,100 metres. The pass is adorned with the famous 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in memory of Bhutanese soldiers. On clear days, the snow-capped Himalayan mountain range stretches across the horizon, creating one of Bhutan’s most iconic landscapes.
Descending from the pass, the climate gradually becomes warmer as you enter the fertile Punakha Valley. Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening surrounded by lush green rice fields and peaceful rivers. -
Day 4 Punakha
Punakha - Phobjikha - Punakha
Morning drive to Phobjikha and visit a visit to Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goemba), one of Bhutan’s oldest and most significant Nyingma monasteries. Perched gracefully on a hill overlooking the valley, the monastery offers magnificent panoramic views of Phobjikha. Founded in the early 17th century, Gangtey Monastery remains an important center for Buddhist learning and spirituality. Guests can admire its impressive Bhutanese architecture, colorful murals, intricate woodwork, and serene atmosphere while learning about the rich religious traditions that continue to thrive here.
Following the monastery visit, enjoy a pleasant walk along the famous Gangtey Nature Trail, one of Bhutan’s most scenic and easiest hiking trails. The trail winds gently through pine forests, open meadows, and charming villages, providing exceptional opportunities to experience rural Bhutanese life. Depending on the season, visitors may also spot grazing yaks, native bird species, and the majestic Black-necked Cranes during the winter months (late October to February).
Before leaving the valley, there will be an opportunity to visit the Black-necked Crane Information Centre, where guests can learn about the conservation efforts dedicated to protecting these rare and sacred birds. Interactive displays, educational exhibits, and observation points provide valuable insight into the ecological importance of Phobjikha Valley and its unique biodiversity.
After completing the sightseeing, begin the scenic drive back to Punakha. -
Day 5 Paro
Punakha to Paro
After breakfast, your exploration begins with a visit to the magnificent Punakha Dzong, widely regarded as the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan. Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong serves as both an administrative centre and an important religious institution. Its impressive white walls, intricate woodwork, colourful murals, and serene courtyards reflect the finest examples of traditional Bhutanese architecture.
A short walk brings you to one of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges, gracefully stretching across the Pho Chhu River. Decorated with colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the bridge offers spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains.
The journey continues with a pleasant walk through rice paddies and rural villages to Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as the Fertility Temple. Dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, affectionately known as the “Divine Madman,” the temple attracts couples from around the world seeking blessings for fertility and family happiness.
Following lunch, you will depart Punakha and travel towards the picturesque valley of Paro. The scenic drive passes through mountain forests, traditional villages, and winding valleys before arriving in one of Bhutan’s most charming destinations. After checking into your hotel, the remainder of the evening is free for relaxation or an optional stroll through Paro Valley.. -
Day 6 Paro
Paro: Hike to Taktshang Monastery (The Tiger’s Nest)
Today promises to be the highlight of your Bhutan adventure as you undertake the unforgettable hike to Taktsang Monastery, popularly known as Tiger’s Nest.
After an early breakfast, a short drive takes you to the trailhead, where your hike begins through fragrant pine forests adorned with colourful prayer flags. The peaceful surroundings, fresh mountain air, and occasional chanting from distant monasteries create a truly spiritual atmosphere.
The hike takes approximately two to three hours uphill at a comfortable pace. Along the route, you will stop at the Taktsang Cafeteria, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the monastery dramatically perched on a sheer cliff nearly 900 metres above the valley floor.
After exploring the monastery and admiring its remarkable architecture and sacred shrines, you will descend back to the valley. Before returning to your hotel, you will also visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, built in the seventh century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. This ancient temple remains an important centre of Buddhist worship and offers a peaceful memorable day.
In the evening, you may choose to experience a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, a relaxing cultural practice believed to have therapeutic benefits -
Day 7 Phuentsholing
Paro to Phuntsholing
Following breakfast, you will continue discovering the rich cultural heritage of Paro Valley.
Your first stop is the National Museum of Bhutan, housed within the historic Ta Dzong watchtower. The museum contains an impressive collection of traditional art, religious artefacts, ancient weapons, textiles, manuscripts, and exhibits illustrating Bhutan’s unique cultural history.
You will then visit the magnificent Rinpung Dzong, an architectural masterpiece overlooking the Paro River. This historic fortress continues to function as both a monastery and administrative centre and is renowned for its beautiful courtyards, intricate paintings, and traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship.
Nearby, you will cross the historic Nya Mey Zam Bridge, a beautifully constructed traditional wooden bridge offering scenic views of the river and surrounding valley.
After lunch, you will begin the scenic drive back to Phuntsholing. The journey descends through lush forests, mountain roads, waterfalls, and picturesque villages before arriving once again at Bhutan’s southern gateway. After checking into your hotel, enjoy your final evening reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of your journey through the Land of the Thunder Dragon. -
Day 8
Bagdogra Departure
After breakfast, you will check out from your hotel and bid farewell to Bhutan. Your driver will accompany you on the drive back to Bagdogra Airport, passing once again through the scenic foothills, tea gardens, and charming towns of northern West Bengal.
