Day 2 Darjeeling
DARJEELING LOCAL SIGHTSEEING Including TigerHill
• Early Morning: Sunrise at Tiger Hill
o Begin your day early with a visit to Tiger Hill to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range. This is a must-see experience in Darjeeling, as the sun’s first rays cast a golden glow over the mountains. It's an early start (around 4:00 AM), so prepare for the chilly morning temperatures.
• Visit Batasia Loop
o After sunrise, head to Batasia Loop, a unique spiral railway track that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Darjeeling. The area is also home to a war memorial dedicated to the soldiers of the Indian Army.
• Visit Ghoom Monastery (Yiga Choeling Monastery)
o From Batasia Loop, head to Ghoom Monastery, which is one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling. It houses a large statue of Maitreya Buddha and offers a peaceful atmosphere.
• Visit Dali Monastery
o After Ghoom, take a short drive to Dali Monastery, also known as the Drukpa Kagyud Monastery. This monastery is located on the outskirts of Darjeeling and offers a serene environment and beautiful views.
• Zoological Park and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
o Head towards the Darjeeling Zoo (Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park) to see wildlife unique to the region, such as snow leopards, red pandas, and Himalayan wolves. The zoo is located close to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which you can also visit to learn about mountaineering history and Tenzing Norgay’s legacy.
o After exploring the zoo and mountaineering institute, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant. Popular spots include Glenary’s, known for its bakery and delicious international and local dishes, or Kunga Restaurant for a taste of Tibetan cuisine, including momos and thukpa.
• Visit Tenzing Rock
o Post-lunch, head to Tenzing Rock, a natural rock formation named after Tenzing Norgay, the first person to summit Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary. The area also offers opportunities for rock climbing.
• Peace Pagoda and Japanese Temple
o After Tenzing Rock, visit the Peace Pagoda, which is located on the slopes of Jalapahar Hill. It offers a peaceful atmosphere and stunning views of Darjeeling and the surrounding mountains. Nearby is the Japanese Temple, a serene spot to relax and appreciate its peaceful surroundings.
