Culinary Delights of the Valley: Food and Kashmir from Bangalore Travel Diary

If you are a food lover and an avid traveler, then Kashmir is a destination you must visit at least once in your lifetime. This beautiful valley in the northernmost part of India not only offers breathtaking landscapes but also a delicious culinary experience that will leave you wanting more. In this blog post, I will take you through my gastronomic journey in the Valley of Kashmir, starting from my hometown Bangalore.

Preparing for the Journey

Before embarking on my culinary adventure, I did some research to understand what Kashmiri food has to offer. I discovered that Kashmiri cuisine is a unique mix of flavors, influenced by the region's rich cultural heritage and the abundance of fresh produce available locally.

One of the most famous dishes from Kashmir is Rogan Josh, a flavorful lamb curry cooked in aromatic spices. Other must-try dishes include Yakhni, a yogurt-based mutton curry, and Wazwan, a lavish multi-course meal served during special occasions.

Arriving in Srinagar

After a long journey from Bangalore, I finally arrived in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The city welcomed me with its cool breeze and the aroma of spices wafting from street food stalls.

I wasted no time in exploring the local street food scene. I started with a plate of Kashmiri Pulao, a fragrant rice dish cooked with nuts and dried fruits. The flavors were subtle yet satisfying.

Exploring the Local Markets

The next day, I decided to dive deeper into Kashmiri cuisine by visiting the local markets. I was amazed by the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables on display. The colorful spice shops caught my attention with their vibrant display of saffron, the prized spice of Kashmir.

I had the opportunity to taste the famous Kashmiri Kahwa, a traditional tea made with saffron, cardamom, and almonds. It was the perfect drink to warm me up on a chilly winter morning.

Kashmiri Wazwan Experience

No visit to Kashmir is complete without indulging in a traditional Wazwan feast. I was fortunate to be invited to a local Kashmiri household to experience this grand culinary affair.

The meal started with a serving of Tabak Maaz, crispy fried lamb ribs marinated with Kashmiri spices. It was followed by a procession of delicacies including Rista (meatballs in red gravy), Gushtaba (minced mutton in yogurt gravy), and Dum Aloo (stuffed potatoes in spicy gravy).

Each dish was expertly cooked and had its own unique flavors. The use of spices like fennel, ginger, and dried ginger added a distinct aroma to the food. The dishes were rich in flavor but not too spicy, allowing the natural taste of the ingredients to shine through.

Indulging in Kashmiri Bakery

As a self-proclaimed dessert lover, I couldn't resist exploring the local bakeries in Srinagar. One of the most famous bakeries in the city is the Sunset Bakery, known for its wide range of cookies and pastries.

I tried the traditional Kashmiri bakery items like the Shirmal, a saffron-infused bread, and the Sheer Chai biscuits, which are best enjoyed with a cup of traditional Kashmiri pink tea.

Leaving with a Full Heart and a Full Stomach

As I bid farewell to the beautiful Valley of Kashmir, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the incredible culinary experience I had. The food in Kashmir not only satisfied my taste buds but also gave me a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage.

From the fragrant biryanis to the delectable pastries, every dish had a story to tell. The use of local ingredients and traditional cooking methods showcased the connection between food and nature in Kashmir.

If you are a food lover like me, I highly recommend adding Kashmir to your bucket list. Be prepared to indulge in a gastronomic adventure that will leave you craving for more.
