Shalimar Bagh, also known as Shalimar Gardens, is a Mughal garden linked through a channel to the northeast of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife, Nur Jahan, in 1619. The Bagh is considered the high point of Mughal horticulture. It is now a public park and also an important tourist attraction. Spanning over 31 acres, Shalimar Bagh offers a splendid example of Mughal garden architectural style, which includes three terraces lined with chinar trees and flowers, fountains, water channels, and pavilions. The uppermost terrace, known as the ‘Abode of Love,’ was built exclusively for the emperor’s most beloved wife. This garden served as a royal court where music and dance performances were hosted. The Bagh is characterized by its central water channel, known as the Shah Nahar, which is lined with polished stones and is supplied with water from the Harwan reservoir.
