Folklore and Legends of Rajasthan

Rajasthan

Rajasthan, the land of kings, is not only famous for its majestic palaces and beautiful deserts but also for its rich folklore and legends. The state is steeped in history and every city, town, and village has its own fascinating tales that have been passed down through generations.

1. Bhangarh Fort - The Haunted Fort

One of the most famous legends in Rajasthan is about the Bhangarh Fort, located in the Alwar district. It is believed to be one of the most haunted places in India. According to the folklore, a magician fell in love with the princess of Bhangarh and tried to use black magic to make her fall in love with him. However, the princess came to know about his plan and ordered the magician to be killed. Before dying, the magician cursed the fort and its inhabitants.

Visitors are not allowed to enter the fort after sunset as it is believed that anyone who stays inside after dark will never return. The ruins of the fort and the eerie atmosphere surrounding it make it a popular destination for thrill-seekers and ghost hunters.

2. The Story of Panna Dhai

Panna Dhai was a nursemaid to Udai Singh, the infant son of Maharaja Sangram Singh. When Chittorgarh was under attack, Panna Dhai, in order to protect the future king, sacrificed her own son. She exchanged her son with the prince and presented him to the attackers. This act of courage and sacrifice ensured the survival of the royal bloodline.

To honor her bravery, a memorial was built in her name in the heart of Chittorgarh. Panna Dhai's tale is celebrated even today, and her story is passed on from generation to generation.

3. The Legend of Dhola Maru

The epic love story of Dhola Maru is a popular legend in Rajasthan. Dhola, the prince of Narwar, and Maru, the princess of Pokaran, fell deeply in love with each other. However, their marriage was opposed by Maru's father who wanted to marry her to a prince from another kingdom.

Fearing separation, Dhola and Maru eloped on their wedding day. They faced numerous challenges and obstacles during their journey, but their love for each other remained steadfast. The story of their love and bravery has been immortalized in Rajasthani folk songs and is still sung by musicians and storytellers across the state.

4. The Curse of Roopmati

Mandu, a city in Madhya Pradesh but with deep historical connections to Rajasthan, is known for the tragic love story of Baz Bahadur and Roopmati. Roopmati was a talented singer and the queen of Mandu. According to legend, Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor, was captivated by Roopmati's beauty and wanted to make her his queen.

In order to avoid Aurangzeb, Roopmati consumed poison and died. Before her death, she cursed the city of Mandu, predicting that it would be deserted and ruined. Today, the ruins of Mandu and the tragic story of Roopmati continue to captivate visitors.

5. The Mysterious Karni Mata Temple

Karni Mata Temple, located in the town of Deshnok, is dedicated to the goddess Karni Mata. The temple is famous for its large population of rats, which are considered sacred and worshipped by the devotees. According to the legend, Karni Mata's stepson, Laxman, drowned in a pond while attempting to drink water. Karni Mata, upon seeing this, brought Laxman back to life and turned him and all her male children into rats.

These rats are believed to be the incarnations of Karni Mata's family members and are treated with utmost reverence. Visitors to the temple consider it auspicious to spot a white rat, which is said to be the manifestation of Karni Mata herself.
