Katra, also known as Katra Vaishno Devi, is a small town located in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains, where the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi resides. It serves as the base camp for pilgrims who visit the temple and is one of the most sacred destinations for Hindus. The town sits at an altitude of about 2,500 feet above sea level and is part of the Reasi district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in Northern India. Katra is characterized by its bustling market streets, full of shops selling souvenirs, religious paraphernalia, and eateries offering local cuisine. The journey to the temple is a pedestrian route that can also be completed on horseback, palanquins, or via the recently introduced helicopter service. The main attraction, the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, is located 14 km from Katra and draws millions of pilgrims annually. Katra has developed robust infrastructure to support tourism, including hotels, guest houses, and a railway station that connects it to major cities.
