Kochi comprises a mix of islands and mainland, with a series of picturesque lagoons, backwaters, and canals. The city's culture is a mélange of traditional Kerala heritage and a colonial past. Iconic landmarks include the Fort Kochi area, famous for Chinese fishing nets, Santa Cruz Basilica, St. Francis Church, and the Jewish Synagogue in Mattancherry. Kochi is also home to colonial architecture, bustling markets, and a vibrant arts scene, reflected through the biennial Kochi-Muziris Biennale. The modern touch is evident in the city's cosmopolitan outlook and infrastructure, with the Kochi Metro serving as a recent development. As a coastal region, Kochi experiences a tropical monsoon climate, and its rich natural bounty makes it a significant tourist destination.
