Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, often referred to as the 'green lung of Kochi', is a tranquil little ecological habitat located in the heart of Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India. This sanctuary is a haven for a large variety of migratory and resident birds and supports a rich growth of mangroves amidst the bustling city. The sanctuary spans around 2.74 hectares, and the adjacent backwaters extend to about 18 hectares. Due to its unique location and the presence of a shallow tidal lake surrounded by thick mangrove vegetation, it plays a significant role in maintaining the ecological balance of the city. Besides serving as a significant nesting ground for birds, it is also a roosting place for bats and houses a small butterfly garden which enhances biological diversity. The sanctuary forms a perfect tapestry of mangroves, birds, insects, and the aquatic ecosystem, which is a sight of beauty and knowledge for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. The mangrove habitat is crucial for the breeding of fish and other aquatic creatures. Mangalavanam has a well-laid-out path for visitors to walk and observe the serene environment without disturbing the natural habitat.
