Al Shaheed Monument, also known as the Martyr's Monument, is an iconic and significant landmark located in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. The monument was designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah Al Turk and was completed in 1983, during the Iran-Iraq War, as a memorial for the Iraqi soldiers who fell in battle. The monument consists of a 50-meter tall split turquoise dome, symbolizing the heavens, and a cube beneath it representing the Earth; these shapes reflect the old Mesopotamian tradition. The turquoise tiles covering the dome are reminiscent of traditional Islamic architectural designs. Inside the massive structure, there's an eternal flame, and the walls are lined with the names of fallen soldiers. It is surrounded by a serene artificial lake and well-maintained parklands which add to the tranquility and reflective atmosphere of the site. Encapsulating both somber remembrance and architectural beauty, the Al Shaheed Monument stands as a sobering reminder of the costs of war while offering a place of contemplation and homage to the sacrifices made by soldiers.
