Type of destination: National Park
Ideal visit duration: 3-5 hours
Calanques National Park, located on the Mediterranean coast near Marseille in France, is a remarkable natural reserve known for its stunning turquoise waters, towering limestone cliffs, and diverse ecosystems. Established in 2012, it extends over 520 square kilometers, including both terrestrial and marine areas. The park protects a unique landscape of rugged white cliffs that dive into the crystal-clear sea, forming a series of dramatic inlets known as calanques. These natural wonders have been sculpted over millions of years by wind and water erosion. The park is home to rich biodiversity, with over 140 terrestrial animal species and around 60 marine species. It supports a wide range of activities like hiking, climbing, kayaking, and snorkeling, attracting visitors seeking adventure and natural beauty. The Calanques are also of great cultural significance, with evidence of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times. Due to the Mediterranean climate, summers are dry and hot, thus hiking is often restricted during this season to prevent forest fires.
