Jagdal Vihara, also known as the Paharpur Vihara or Somapura Mahavihara, is a significant archaeological site located in the Paharpur area of the Naogaon District in the Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the best-known Buddhist viharas in the Indian Subcontinent and is an important example of South Asian Buddhism's material heritage. It dates back to the 8th century and was founded by the second Pala king Dharmapala. The architecture of the site shows influences from Southeast Asia, underscoring the cultural exchanges in the region. The central stupa, which was a prominent landmark in the area, is surrounded by a quadrangular court with monastic cells along the walls. Excavations have revealed a wealth of information about the religious, cultural, and daily life of its inhabitants. Historically, Paharpur Vihara served as an important intellectual center, attracting scholars from all over the world.
