Type of destination: Historical City
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Nara, the capital city of Nara Prefecture in Japan, is renowned for its historical significance and rich cultural heritage. Established in the year 710 at Heijo, the city served as Japan’s first permanent capital. This historical context gives the city an abundance of ancient temples, shrines, and ruins, with eight of these complexes collectively listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, notably including Todai-ji, home to the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana, and the Kasuga-taisha shrine with its iconic lanterns. Nara is also famous for its free-roaming deer, considered in Shinto to be messengers of the gods, which have become a symbol of the city and a tourist attraction. The city offers a mix of expansive parks, such as Nara Park, and traditional neighborhoods, showcasing classic Japanese architecture and a slower pace of life compared to the bustling metropoles of Tokyo and Osaka. Nara’s museums, such as the Nara National Museum, provide insight into the city’s art, history, and culture, further enriching visitors’ experiences.
