Pulteney Bridge is one of Bath's most iconic landmarks, renowned for its superb Palladian architecture by Robert Adam. Completed in 1774, it stands over the River Avon and is one of the few bridges worldwide with shops built across its full span on both sides. Fashioned from Bath stone, Pulteney Bridge was designed for William Pulteney and connects central Bath to the land he wished to develop on the other side of the river. Taking inspiration from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, it's been designated as a Grade I listed building. Over the years, modifications and restorations have occurred, with the last major refurbishment taking place in the twentieth century to restore much of the original design. It's a picturesque site capturing the essence of Bath's Georgian architectural beauty, attracting tourists and photographers alike. With quaint shops and the tranquil flow of the Avon beneath, it offers a unique and charming experience of the city. The bridge is also a short walk away from other notable sights like the Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths, and modern Thermae Bath Spa, making it an essential part of Bath’s heritage and a testament to its historical prosperity and architectural ingenuity.
