The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, often just referred to as BALTIC, is a major international center for contemporary art situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, in Gateshead, near Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Housed in a converted flour mill, BALTIC was opened to the public in 2002. Spanning over five floors, the venue provides around 3000 square meters of exhibition space, showcasing a diverse range of contemporary visual art, from multimedia installations to painting and sculpture. BALTIC has no permanent collection, offering instead a constantly changing calendar of exhibitions and events that aim to challenge and inspire its audience. In addition to its exhibition programme, BALTIC also facilitates artist talks, workshops, and educational courses. The center includes a library, archive, a shop, and a rooftop restaurant offering spectacular views of the Newcastle and Gateshead cityscape. It has played a pivotal role in the cultural renaissance of the North East of England, contributing to the area's reputation as a hub for art and creativity.
