Once you understand this route, everything becomes easier: train bookings, taxi choices, bus connections, and where to stay if you arrive late. Use this article to plan a smooth arrival and avoid last-minute surprises.

Why Abu Road Matters for Mount Abu Travel

Abu Road is the nearest major railway station to Mount Abu and the most common entry point for travellers coming by train. The station lies on the busy Delhi-Ahmedabad rail corridor, so it connects well with cities such as Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Mumbai. From there, Mount Abu is reached by a mountain road that climbs steadily into the Aravalli range.

The key thing to remember is that Abu Road is not Mount Abu. It is a separate town on the lower plains, and the hill station is still about 28-30 km away. In normal traffic, the road transfer takes around 45-60 minutes, though it can stretch longer on weekends, holidays, foggy mornings, or during peak monsoon travel.

How to Reach Abu Road by Train

For many Indian travellers, the simplest way to access Mount Abu is by taking a train to Abu Road Junction and then continuing by taxi or bus. Because the station sits on a major route, you will usually find decent connectivity from north, west and central India. Trains can be busy in season, especially from October to March and during long weekends, so booking early is wise.

What to expect at the station

Abu Road station is functional and straightforward rather than touristy. You will find basic food stalls, auto-rickshaws, prepaid taxi counters in some periods, and a steady flow of shared taxis going up to Mount Abu. If you are arriving late at night, it is safer to pre-arrange your transfer or check the availability of licensed taxis before you step out.

Road Distance from Abu Road to Mount Abu

The drive from Abu Road to Mount Abu is short but winding. The road climbs from the plains to the plateau, which means slower speeds, sharper bends and occasional heavy vehicle movement. In a private cab, the trip is comfortable if the driver is experienced with hill roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, carry necessary medication and avoid heavy meals before the ascent.

Taxi, shared cab, or bus?

• Private taxi: Usually the easiest option for families, seniors, and travellers with luggage. Expect roughly ?800-?1,500 for the one-way ride, depending on vehicle type, time of day and demand.
• Shared taxi: Cheaper and commonly available near the station area. Fares generally fall around ?150-?300 per person, but vehicles leave only when filled.
• Bus: State transport and local buses operate on this route, though frequency can vary. Fares are lower, often around ?50-?100 per person, but comfort and timing are less predictable.

If you are arriving during evening hours, a private taxi is often worth the extra cost. For solo travellers and backpackers, shared cabs are a sensible middle ground, provided you are comfortable waiting for seats to fill.

Best Routes and Travel Planning Tips

Most visitors approach Mount Abu through one of three practical routes: by train to Abu Road, by road from Udaipur or Ahmedabad, or as part of a Rajasthan circuit that includes Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The best choice depends on your starting point and how much time you have.

By road from nearby cities

From Udaipur, Mount Abu is roughly 165 km away and the drive usually takes 3.5-5 hours. From Ahmedabad, the distance is about 220-230 km, with travel time around 4.5-6 hours depending on traffic and stops. From Jaipur, the journey is longer, usually 9-11 hours by road, so most travellers prefer a train or a broken journey with an overnight halt.

When to travel

October to March is the most comfortable period for Mount Abu, with pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler evenings. April to June brings more travellers looking for relief from the heat, so hotels can become expensive. July to September sees monsoon showers, greener hills and lower room rates, but road conditions may be slower and mist can reduce visibility on the climb from Abu Road.

How long to keep for this leg

If Mount Abu is part of a larger Rajasthan itinerary, keep at least half a day for the Abu Road transfer alone. If you are arriving by train in the morning, you can comfortably reach your hotel by lunchtime. For evening arrivals, plan a buffer in case your train is delayed, because waiting for hill transport after dark can be tiring.

Where to Stay: Abu Road or Mount Abu?

Most travellers should stay in Mount Abu rather than Abu Road, because the attraction areas, viewpoints and lakefront are all on the hill station side. Abu Road is better suited for transit stops, business travel, or very late arrivals when you do not want to climb the hill immediately. The town has basic hotels and lodges, but it does not have the leisure atmosphere people usually want from a Mount Abu holiday.

Hotel budget ranges

• Budget stays in Abu Road: ?900-?1,800 per night
• Mid-range hotels in Mount Abu: ?2,500-?5,500 per night
• Better hill-view resorts or heritage-style stays: ?6,000-?12,000 per night and above

Prices rise on weekends, public holidays and during school vacation periods. If you are travelling between December and January or around long weekends, book early and confirm whether the hotel includes pickup from Abu Road.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Arrival

Small details make a big difference on this route. Keep some cash handy for smaller taxis and food stalls, because not every service accepts digital payment reliably. If you are arriving by train, step out with your phone charged and a backup power bank, since you may need to coordinate with your driver or hotel.

What to carry for the last stretch

• Water and light snacks, especially for children and elderly travellers
• A jacket in winter, because the hill station can feel much cooler than Abu Road
• Motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive to curves
• Hotel confirmation and driver contact details
• Extra time buffer for train delays and road traffic

If you are travelling with elderly parents or small children, ask your hotel whether they can arrange a direct transfer from Abu Road. This often reduces confusion and saves you from negotiating at the station.

Sample Itineraries Using Abu Road Access

For a short weekend trip, the cleanest plan is to take a Friday night train to Abu Road, reach Mount Abu on Saturday morning, spend Saturday and Sunday exploring the viewpoints, Nakki Lake area, Dilwara Temples and local markets, and return Sunday evening or Monday morning. This works well for travellers from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Udaipur.

If you have three to four days, you can combine Mount Abu with Udaipur or Nathdwara. In that case, use Abu Road as a transfer point only if it saves time on rail connectivity. Otherwise, a direct road route to Mount Abu may be more comfortable if you are already on a Rajasthan road trip.
