Banswara City of Hundred Islands

If you are planning a Rajasthan trip and want something calmer than the usual desert circuit, Banswara deserves a close look. Known as the City of Hundred Islands, it gives you lakes, river islands, tribal culture, and a slower pace that feels very different from Jaipur or Jaisalmer.

This guide is for Indian travellers who want practical help: when to go, how to reach Banswara, what to see, how long to stay, and what kind of budget to expect. By the end, you will have a clear plan for a short break, a road trip stop, or a relaxed Rajasthan holiday around Banswara.

Why Banswara feels different from the rest of Rajasthan

Banswara sits in southern Rajasthan, close to the borders of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, and that geography shapes everything about it. Instead of sand dunes and fort walls, you get water bodies, green patches, forested stretches, and many small islands formed by the Mahi River and local reservoirs. The town is also associated with the Bhil community, so you will notice a strong tribal presence in food, markets, festivals, and everyday life.

For many Indian travellers, Banswara works best as a quiet detour. It is not overloaded with tourist traffic, so you can move around without the rush you find in bigger cities. If you enjoy scenic drives, local culture, and photogenic water views, this is one of Rajasthan’s more refreshing surprises.

Where the “hundred islands” come from

The title City of Hundred Islands refers to the many small islands and island-like land patches around the town, especially in areas shaped by the Mahi River and nearby water systems. Some of the best-known viewpoints are around the Mahi Dam, Anand Sagar Lake, and the quieter river stretches near the town outskirts. The exact number of islands can vary with water levels, so treat the “hundred” as a poetic name rather than a fixed count.

This water-rich landscape is what makes Banswara unusual in Rajasthan. In the monsoon and post-monsoon months, the lakes and backwaters look fuller and more dramatic. In drier months, the scenery is still pleasant, but the sense of green open space is less intense.

Best time to visit Banswara

The most comfortable time to visit is usually from October to March, when the weather is pleasant for sightseeing, lakeside walks, and short drives. Day temperatures are easier to handle, and evenings can be cool enough for a light jacket. If you are planning to explore both the town and nearby dams, this is the safest bet.

July to September can be lovely if you enjoy monsoon scenery. The hills and water bodies look greener, and the island landscapes stand out more clearly. But roads can become slippery and some outdoor plans may be affected by heavy rain, so keep buffer time.

April to June gets hot, especially in the afternoons. If your dates are fixed, plan early-morning sightseeing, long breaks indoors, and shorter travel legs.

Season	What it feels like	Best for
October to March	Cool to pleasant	Full sightseeing, family trips, road trips
July to September	Green and wet	Scenic drives, photography, nature lovers
April to June	Hot and dry	Short trips with early starts

How to reach Banswara

Banswara does not have a major commercial airport of its own, so most travellers arrive by road from nearby cities or by train plus road transfer. The nearest larger airports are generally in Udaipur and Vadodara, depending on your route and flight options. From there, you can continue by taxi or bus.

By road

Road travel is the easiest way to reach Banswara if you are already in southern Rajasthan, Gujarat, or Madhya Pradesh. From Udaipur, the drive is roughly 160-180 km and usually takes about 4-5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. From Vadodara, the distance is longer, often around 200 km or more, so expect a longer road journey. Private cabs can cost around ?4,000-?7,500 one way depending on vehicle type and season.

By train

Banswara itself does not have a major railway station with the kind of connectivity you may expect in larger cities. Travellers often use nearby railheads and then hire a taxi or board a bus for the final stretch. Since train connections and station access can change, check the latest options before booking your route.

By bus

State and private buses connect Banswara with Udaipur, Dungarpur, Ratlam, Dahod, and other nearby towns. Bus travel is usually budget-friendly, with fares often ranging from ?300-?900 depending on the service and distance. If you are travelling with family, a cab or self-drive car is more comfortable for sightseeing across scattered points.

What to see in and around Banswara

Banswara is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace. You do not need a packed checklist, but a mix of lakes, temples, and scenic viewpoints makes for a satisfying 2-3 day stay.

Anand Sagar Lake

This is one of the most popular places in town and a good starting point for your visit. The lake area is pleasant in the evening, and it is where many travellers get their first real sense of Banswara’s water-based landscape. It is also a handy spot if you want a relaxed walk after a day on the road.

Mahi Dam and nearby viewpoints

The Mahi Dam area is one of the most recognizable parts of the Banswara story. It gives you open water, broad views, and in some seasons, a clear look at the island patterns that earned the town its nickname. Travel time from the main town is usually manageable, but it is still worth keeping an hour or two aside for the round trip and photo stops.

Tripura Sundari Temple

Located a short drive from Banswara, this temple is important for many devotees and also attracts travellers interested in heritage and local religious culture. The setting is peaceful, and the visit works well as part of a half-day outing. Dress modestly and check local timings before you go.

Somnath Temple and local ghats

Depending on your route, you may also stop at smaller temples and river-side points within or near town. These spots are less about grand architecture and more about the feel of the place: daily worship, local rituals, and simple views of water and stone steps.

Ram Kund and nearby natural pockets

Some visitors also enjoy local picnic spots and river-facing areas around the town. These are good for a laid-back afternoon, especially if you are travelling with children or older family members and want a low-effort outing.

Things to do if you have 2 to 3 days

Banswara works well for a short itinerary. If you try to do too much, you will only spend time moving between points. A better plan is to combine one full day for the town and lakes with one day for a temple-and-dam circuit.

1. Start with the lakes — begin at Anand Sagar Lake and nearby viewpoints in the late afternoon.
2. Plan one scenic drive — choose either Mahi Dam or a temple route for the next day.
3. Keep evenings open — local food, markets, and slow walks are a big part of the experience.
4. Add a nearby town only if time allows — Dungarpur or the wider south Rajasthan belt can be added if you have more days.

If you love photography, go out during the early morning and again near sunset. The reflections on the water and the softer light over the hills make a big difference.

Food, markets, and local experience

Banswara’s food scene is straightforward, with small restaurants, dhabas, and local eateries doing most of the work. You will find familiar North Indian meals, thalis, snacks, tea stalls, and some regional flavours that reflect the tribal and Rajasthani setting. If you enjoy simple vegetarian food, you should have no trouble eating well.

For shopping, do not expect large branded markets. Instead, look for local handicrafts, everyday textiles, and small-town market life. The real value here is not luxury shopping but a chance to observe how the town moves: morning tea stalls, evening crowds, and the slower rhythm around the lake areas.

Meal costs are usually reasonable. A simple lunch may cost around ?150-?300 per person at a local place, while a nicer family restaurant may land closer to ?400-?800 per person. Prices vary, so confirm before ordering if you are on a fixed budget.

Where to stay and what budget to expect

Accommodation in Banswara is generally more limited than in major Rajasthan tourist cities, but you will still find budget hotels, mid-range stays, and some comfortable options for families. Advance booking is wise if you are travelling during holidays, festival periods, or the cooler winter months.

A rough stay budget looks like this:

• Budget hotels: ?1,200-?2,000 per night
• Mid-range hotels: ?2,500-?4,500 per night
• Better family stays: ?4,500-?7,500 per night

For a 2-night trip, a couple can manage a comfortable Banswara getaway in the range of ?8,000-?18,000 excluding long-distance flights or luxury transport, depending on hotel choice and how much you move around by cab. If you add Udaipur or another nearby city, the total will rise accordingly.

Sample 2-day Banswara itinerary

If you want a simple plan, use this as a starting point and adjust based on your arrival time.

Day 1

Arrive by afternoon, check in, and head to Anand Sagar Lake for a relaxed evening. Keep dinner local and rest early, especially if you have driven in from Udaipur or Vadodara.

Day 2

Take an early drive to Mahi Dam or a nearby scenic point, then return for lunch and a temple visit such as Tripura Sundari. Use the late afternoon for market time or another lake-side stop before dinner.

If you have a third day, keep it flexible for extra temple visits, a slower village drive, or an extended monsoon outing if the weather is on your side.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are enough for Banswara?

Is Banswara good for family trips?

Yes, especially if your family prefers quieter places, short drives, and lakeside evenings. The town is easier to enjoy when you are not trying to tick off too many sights. Just keep transport arranged in advance, since public options may be less convenient for sightseeing with children or elders.

Can you visit Banswara during monsoon?

How do I plan Banswara with other Rajasthan destinations?

Banswara pairs well with Udaipur, Dungarpur, and the southern Rajasthan belt. If you are already exploring Udaipur, adding Banswara gives your trip a greener, calmer contrast. It also works as part of a Gujarat-Rajasthan road trip because of its location near the border.
