Bhowali and Ramgarh Orchards

If you are planning a slow, scenic break in the Kumaon hills, Bhowali and Ramgarh offer exactly the kind of orchard country many Indian travellers look for. This guide will help you plan a trip around apple, pear, peach, apricot and plum orchards, with practical details on when to go, how to get there, where to stay, and how to combine the trip with nearby Uttarakhand stops.

Why Bhowali and Ramgarh suit orchard travellers

Bhowali and Ramgarh sit in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, in a region known for fruit-growing, quiet hill roads and clear views of the Himalayas on a good day. Bhowali works well as a convenient base because it is better connected and has more stay options, while Ramgarh feels slower and greener, with stretches of orchards, village lanes and old colonial-era fruit estates.

For Indian travellers, this is a trip that works best if you like unhurried mornings, local food, short walks and day drives rather than packed sightseeing. You can spend two to four days here comfortably, and if you are coming from Delhi or nearby NCR, it makes a rewarding weekend-plus-one-day escape.

Best time to visit the orchards

The orchard landscape changes through the year, so the best time depends on what you want to see. Spring, especially March to April, brings blossom season in many parts of Kumaon, when the hills look softer and fresher. Early summer, from May to June, is pleasant for a cool retreat, while late monsoon and autumn often give you the clearest views.

Fruit seasons vary by crop and altitude, and exact harvest windows can change from year to year, so confirm locally before planning around picking or estate visits. In general, apples tend to be associated with later summer and autumn, while peaches, plums and apricots often appear earlier in the season.

Season	What you may see	Travel feel
March to April	Blossoms, fresh greenery	Best for soft weather and photography
May to June	Warm days, pleasant evenings	Good for a hill break from plains heat
July to September	Deep green hills, rain-fed growth	Scenic but road conditions can vary
October to November	Clear skies, harvest activity in some orchards	Excellent for views and relaxed drives

How to reach Bhowali and Ramgarh

Most visitors reach this belt via Kathgodam, which is the nearest major railhead and is about 30-40 km from Bhowali depending on the exact route. The drive from Kathgodam usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, though traffic and road conditions can stretch it. From Delhi, many travellers take a train to Kathgodam or drive via Hapur, Moradabad and Haldwani for a journey that can easily take 7 to 9 hours or more.

You can also fly to Pantnagar airport and continue by road, but flight schedules are limited and should be checked well in advance. If you are self-driving from Nainital, Bhowali is about 10-12 km away and usually takes 20-30 minutes, while Ramgarh is a further hill drive depending on where you stay.

Road travel tips

• Keep motion-sickness tablets handy if you are sensitive to mountain roads.
• Start early from the plains to avoid evening traffic near Haldwani and Kathgodam.
• In the rainy season, leave extra time because hill roads can slow down after showers or small landslides.
• Fuel up in the plains before climbing, especially if you plan to roam between villages.

What makes Ramgarh special

Ramgarh is often called the fruit bowl area by local travellers because orchards and small farms are part of the landscape rather than a separate attraction. You are more likely to notice long stretches of fruit trees, terraced slopes and quiet village life than any single monument. The appeal lies in slow movement: a roadside stop for fresh fruit, a walk past old houses, and long pauses for mountain views.

Ramgarh is also linked with literary history and old hill station culture. Some travellers come here for the calm atmosphere that has attracted writers and artists over the years, while others simply want a less crowded alternative to busier parts of Kumaon. If you are looking for a place where mornings begin with birdsong and end with cool, still evenings, Ramgarh fits well.

Bhowali as your base for orchard exploration

Bhowali is more practical than Ramgarh for many visitors. It has easier road access, markets for daily needs, fruit sellers, cafes and a wider choice of hotels and homestays. You can base yourself here and make short trips to Ramgarh, Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal without changing accommodation every day.

If you are travelling with family, older parents or children, Bhowali often feels easier because you can access medical stores, taxis and basic services more quickly. It is a sensible choice if you want scenic surroundings without giving up convenience.

Things to do around the orchards

Walks, drives and estate visits

The simplest pleasure here is to drive or walk through orchard roads in the morning or near sunset. You will see terraced fields, scattered homes and fruit-laden branches in season. Some estates and farm stays may allow visitors to look around, taste produce or join a guided walk, but access rules depend on the property, so it is best to ask before you go.

Pair the trip with nearby lakes

One advantage of staying in Bhowali or Ramgarh is easy access to Kumaon’s lake circuit. Bhimtal is around 20-25 km from Bhowali and usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour by road. Sattal and Naukuchiatal can also be visited on the same day if you start early and keep the pace relaxed. Nainital is another straightforward day trip, though traffic near the town can be heavier on weekends and holidays.

Food to try

Look for simple pahadi meals, fresh curd, local vegetables, rotis made with millets where available, and seasonal fruit products. In the right months, you may find jams, squashes, chutneys and fresh fruit sold by roadside vendors or estate owners. If a homestay offers home-cooked food, that is usually the easiest way to taste local flavours without overcomplicating the trip.

Where to stay and what it may cost

Accommodation in and around Bhowali ranges from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels, boutique stays and homestays. Ramgarh has fewer options than Bhowali, but the setting can feel quieter and more intimate, especially if you prefer a property with orchard views. Prices are seasonal and change quickly during summer and long weekends, so treat these as indicative ranges only.

Stay type	Approximate cost per night	Good for
Budget guesthouse	?1,200-?2,500	Short stays, basic comfort
Mid-range hotel or homestay	?2,500-?5,500	Families, couples, longer weekends
Boutique stay or orchard-facing villa	?5,500-?12,000+	Relaxed, scenic trips with better privacy

If you are booking in April, May, June, October or around holiday weekends, reserve early. For orchard stays, ask whether the property actually has fruit trees on-site or is simply located in the same region, because the experience can differ a lot.

Suggested 3-day itinerary

This is a practical pace for most travellers. It gives you enough time to enjoy the area without rushing from one viewpoint to another.

1. Day 1: Arrive at Kathgodam, drive to Bhowali, check in, rest, and take an evening walk through the local market.
2. Day 2: Spend the morning in Ramgarh and nearby orchard roads, then have lunch at a homestay or local restaurant. In the afternoon, continue to a nearby lake such as Bhimtal or Naukuchiatal.
3. Day 3: Choose either a slower Ramgarh morning with fruit and tea, or a short trip to Nainital before returning to the plains.

If you have only two days, skip one lake and focus on Bhowali-Ramgarh plus a single scenic stop. The strength of this destination is not quantity, but the calm pace.

Practical travel tips for Indian visitors

• Carry light woollens even in summer; evenings can feel cool.
• Keep some cash for small vendors and local taxis, though digital payments work in many places.
• Book taxis in advance if you want a full-day local circuit, especially in peak season.
• Check road conditions during monsoon months before starting from the plains.
• Confirm fruit-picking or orchard-entry permissions directly with the property or host.

For food and transport, most travellers should budget roughly ?1,500-?3,000 per day per person if travelling moderately, excluding hotel costs. If you choose better stays, private cabs and more meals out, your spend will naturally rise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bhowali a good base for visiting Ramgarh orchards?

Yes, Bhowali is one of the most practical bases for exploring Ramgarh and nearby hill towns. It has better road access, more accommodation choices and easier access to taxis and shops. If you want a quieter setting, stay in Ramgarh itself; if you want convenience, Bhowali works better.

How many days do you need for Bhowali and Ramgarh?

Two days is enough for a quick look at the orchards and one nearby lake, but three days feels more comfortable. If you want to slow down, walk around villages and take more side trips, four days is even better. The area is best enjoyed without packing the schedule too tightly.

Can you see apple orchards all year round?

You can see orchard landscapes much of the year, but the fruit and the visual feel change with the seasons. Blossom, leaf growth and harvest periods are different, so if you want a specific experience, ask a local stay or orchard owner about the month you are visiting. Exact timing depends on weather and altitude.

Are Bhowali and Ramgarh suitable for family trips?

Yes, they are very suitable for families who prefer quiet hill travel over hectic sightseeing. Bhowali, in particular, is useful because it is easier to manage basic needs and short drives. Just keep travel times flexible because mountain roads can be slower than they look on a map.

What should you buy from the area?

Seasonal fruit products, jams, squashes, honey and local homemade preserves are popular purchases. Fresh fruit is best bought in season, and quality can vary from seller to seller. Ask what is freshly made and what is local to the specific area before buying in bulk.

Is this trip best by self-drive or taxi?

Both can work well. Self-drive gives you flexibility for orchard roads and side trips, while a hired cab is easier if you want to relax and avoid hill driving stress. If you are travelling with family, many visitors prefer a local taxi for the full trip.

Conclusion

Bhowali and Ramgarh are not about ticking off many attractions. They are about fruit-country roads, cool air, unhurried mornings and simple, scenic days in Uttarakhand. If you want a hill trip that feels restorative rather than rushed, this is one of the most satisfying ways to experience Kumaon.
