Akiu Great Falls is one of the most renowned waterfalls in Japan, situated in the scenic beauty of Akiu Onsen, within the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. It is ranked as one of the 'Top Three Waterfalls' of Japan. With a height of about 55 meters (180 feet) and a width of 6 meters (20 feet), it presents a breathtaking view to visitors. Akiu Great Falls is part of the Natori River and is surrounded by a lush forest, providing a tranquil and picturesque setting. This natural landmark is also a part of Rairai Gorge, offering spectacular views throughout the year. In spring and summer, the area's lush greenery contrasts beautifully with the waterfall, while autumn brings stunning foliage, and winter occasionally dresses the falls in icicles and snow, showcasing the seasonal beauty of Japan. The waterfall is accessible through a well-maintained track and offers viewing platforms for tourists. Aside from its beauty, Akiu Great Falls is also associated with the legendary monk and poet Matsuo Basho, who visited the falls and included them in his writings.
