Best Time To Visit Akiu Great Falls (Sendai) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Akiuten no Taki (Akiu Great Falls) in Sendai, Japan

Akiu Great Falls, located in the scenic area of Miyagi Prefecture, near Sendai, is one of the most famous waterfalls in northern Japan. To capture the falls at their most spectacular, visiting during late spring to early summer (May to July) is ideal. During this period, the snowmelt from the mountains increases the volume of water, making the falls particularly powerful and the surrounding lush greenery exceptionally vibrant. Additionally, the temperate weather provides a comfortable environment for enjoying both the falls and the nearby Akiu Onsen, a celebrated hot spring resort area.

Those seeking a different kind of beauty might consider a visit in autumn (late September to November), when the changing colors of the leaves create a stunning backdrop against the falling water, showcasing the fall foliage in all its glory. The contrast of the vivid red, yellow, and orange leaves against the waterfall creates a picturesque landscape, perfect for photography enthusiasts. However, be mindful of the fact that autumn can also be a popular season for tourists, so it's wise to plan your visit on weekdays or off-peak times to avoid crowds.
