Food History of Arc de Triomphe (Montpellier), Montpellier, France

Montpellier is a city with a rich culinary history influenced by its location in the Occitanie region in the south of France and its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. The Arc de Triomphe itself is a historical monument, built in 1691 in honor of Louis XIV, and while it does not have a direct connection to food history, it presides over a city that is abundant in gastronomical delights, combining traditional French cuisine with Catalan and Mediterranean influences.

The food in Montpellier has evolved over the centuries with contributions from various cultures, especially with the city being a major trading port. Markets and spices from the East had a significant impact on the local food with the usage of herbs and ingredients such as olive oil, garlic, and tomatoes. The city’s comfortably warm climate provides the perfect conditions for growing fresh produce, which forms the basis of the local cuisine.
