There you go - ancient temples in muddled India
I'm giving five stars, but that's relative, not absolute. Considering the situation, this wonderful Tourist Lodge is a godsend. Bishnupur may have been a sleepy enclave once upon a time, but today it's just the same scrappy town (very large town) that you see all over India - India has become homogenized, long before Modi sought to romanticise that idea. It is in an excellent location - just walk down to the ancient cake-like presented temple, which is fascinating. Be aware they shamelessly rip-off the foreign tourists for the entrance fee. The Tourist Lodge has good reception, and frankly, a fantastic restaurant! No need to find food outside (couldn't see any decent places anyway). And best of all - try the potato chips... tastiest I've had for decades (this is a big potato growing area). All the food at the restaurant was high quality. My suggestion is, take a tour guide trip to surrounding temple villages, because you'll get to see the country side, and an insight into how India, and Bengal, used to be. It is a very rich agricultural area with tribals doing quite nicely, farming every imaginable crop. The old temples are cute, but the landscape is fascinating. Basics: room was perfectly fine, with balcony and reasonable bathroom. Beds were adequate, light-blocking adequate. Sleep quality was in general fine, except for the first night when the cricket matches nearby went of until 1am with extremely loud speakers, and then some super-pomp ranted and raved for another two hours after that!!! It is is India after all, so one can't get riled up. Suck it up and feel exhaused the next day. While we were there, it was the after-glow of the Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla temple at Ayodhya. Saffron flags everywhere (god forbid anyone who didn't sport a saffron flag! even if this is West Bengal). And then it was Republic Day - a nice coincidence for Modi. But certainly it was a great time to have fun for the locals, and have fun all night they did! Things quietened down after that. To be honest, I'm not sure why anyone would want to come to Bishnupur. The old temples are curious, but Bishnupur has provided nothing else to attract tourists. It remains just another grubby Indian town, with a few old curios. But I do like the terracotta horse statues!

Best Option In Bishnupur
BTL aka Bishnupur Tourism property is sistuated at approx 2.5 Km from the railway station which takes approx 15 mins to reach via a toto, available outside the station itself. The rooms which we stayed was in the first floor. It was neat and clean, toilet was also super clean with all the toiletries readily available. Rooms in ground floor are cheaper but they are also good neat and clean. Restaurant serves you all sorts of dishes but stick to simple basic Bengali menu, which is tasty and hygenic. Breakfast is complimentary but only limited menu of Puri Sabji/Bread Butter Milk , Banana/ Milk and cornflakes. In Lunch and dinner go for the veg or non veg thali costing around 180 and 360 each, instead or ordering ala carte. For Sightseeing around Bishnupur, hire a toto from right outside the lodge, they will charge approx Rs. 400 for showing all notable spots in Bishnupur, bascially old temples ageing from 300-400 years with good architecture. This will take 2 hrs max. If you are having a car you can drive to mukutmanipur (72 kms) and come back on the same day. Else can also hire a car from the lodge itself. Overall with very limited options this is the best place to stay in Bishnupur.

TOURIST HOME AT BISHNUPUR
This is the best place to stay in Bishnupur. Rooms are very good. Restaurant attached to the property. They serve Breakfast, Lunch and dinner.. The also have a bar. Reasonably priced and worth the money. You get autos (upto 4 persons per auto) for local sightseeing. Charges about 400/- and auto drives also act as a guide. This is government maintained..

Nice Hotel
The WBTDCL Torist Lodge at Bishnupur is a large and modern state run hotel located in the heart of the town. The rooms were large and equipped with air conditioning, TV and electric kettle. The geyser in the attached bath was functional. Food at the restaurant was tasty, but choice of items was limited. The bar was cosy and well stocked. Parking facilities are available. The staff were polite and helpful. Definitely recommended for visitors to Bishnupur

A place to avoid
I had booked this place for a couple of nights after reading the reviews but was extremely disappointed. Its at the very pits of the pecking order. The linens are filthy and the walls have stains of paan. The room was cluttered with furnitures and heaps of broken furnitures filled the corridors. Its located in a narrow lane amidst the busy part of the town. Most importantly the people had that disinterested look on their face which puts you off. I left the place in 20 minutes flat even after having paid in full. Bishnupur has other better hotels and Durgapur which is 2 hours drive away has many more at several price points.
