Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Haeju Central Square is located in the heart of Haeju, which is the capital city of South Hwanghae Province in North Korea. This public square is a typical feature found in many North Korean cities, serving as a venue for state-organized rallies and parades. It is often flanked by important government buildings, as well as monuments celebrating the country's political and revolutionary history. Haeju itself is situated on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, overlooking the Yellow Sea, and is a significant port for maritime trade. Haeju is historically and culturally rich, featuring several ancient relics, historic sites, and scenic landscapes, including the nearby famous Sohyon Academy and Mount Suyang. Despite being a regional center, Haeju does not draw a lot of international tourists primarily due to travel restrictions imposed by the North Korean government. The Central Square also features statues and propaganda related to the nation's leaders, reflecting the political environment of the country.
