Hakone Shrine is a serene and picturesque landmark set along the shores of Lake Ashi, within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Reaching this spiritual site can be a delightful journey, as Hakone offers various transportation options amidst its stunning natural scenery.
Traveling to Hakone Shrine
Visitors typically first make their way to Hakone, which is conveniently accessed from Tokyo.
From Tokyo to Hakone
- By Train: The most efficient way to reach Hakone from Tokyo is by taking the Odakyu Electric Railway's 'Romancecar' from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station. From there, you can transfer to a local train or bus to reach the shrine.
- By Bus: Direct buses are available from the Shinjuku Bus Terminal to Hakone, which can be a more economical but slower option.
Within Hakone:
- Hakone Tozan Train: From Hakone-Yumoto, take the Hakone Tozan Train to Gora Station, then switch to the cable car up to Sounzan Station, followed by the Hakone Ropeway to Togendai Station.
- Bus: Alternatively, Hakone Tozan buses directly connect Hakone-Yumoto Station with different areas in Hakone, including stops near the shrine.
- Hakone Sightseeing Cruise: From Togendai Station, you can board the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise across Lake Ashi to reach Hakone Shrine. The sightseeing boats, often designed to resemble pirate ships, offer a scenic and direct route to the shrine.
- On foot: For those who prefer walking, a well-marked trail from Moto-Hakone to the shrine offers a peaceful hike alongside Lake Ashi.
Important Tip: If you plan on using various forms of transportation within Hakone, consider purchasing a Hakone Free Pass for unlimited use of Odakyu-affiliated buses, trains, boats, and cablecars for two or three days.
Additional Travel Information
- Ensure to check the timetable for the last departures, especially for buses and the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, as services may end early in the evening.
- Traffic can be heavy on weekends and holidays, so plan your journey accordingly.
- The area around the shrine can become foggy, mainly because of its proximity to the lake. It's advisable to check the weather conditions on the day of your visit.
