Must-Try Foods In Hasedera Temple (Kamakura) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Hasedera Temple, Kamakura, Japan

Hasedera Temple, known for its stunning view of the coastal city of Kamakura and its towering statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, has a rich cultural history that dates back to the 8th century. Although the temple itself is not specifically famous for its food history, it is situated in a city that has a strong culinary culture influenced by the samurai class and the Zen Buddhism practiced by the monks in the Kamakura period.

Within this historical backdrop, vegetarian cuisine, particularly Shojin Ryori (Zen Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), emerged as an integral part of Kamakura's food scene. This type of cuisine abstains from animal products and is based on simplicity and mindfulness towards nature, closely associated with the dietary restrictions of Buddhist monks. Visitors to Hasedera can explore the traditional roots of Japanese vegetarian dishes, some of which are still served in the temple's vicinity today.
