It's situated on the eastern bank of the Thanlwin River (Salween River), with a backdrop of picturesque limestone hills and caves which have been significant to the local communities for generations.

Early Tourism

Historically, Hpa-An was not widely known as a major tourist destination. Its popularity began to increase in the late 20th century, as travelers started to seek out more off-the-beaten-path destinations that offered authentic cultural experiences and natural beauty. The profound spirituality and numerous Buddhist sites around the area have also attracted those interested in religious and cultural tourism.

Growth in Popularity

The turn of the millennium marked the beginning of a new era for Hpa-An's tourism. Myanmar's gradual opening up to international travelers led to more visitors discovering the area's charm. The picturesque setting of Hpa-An, combined with its proximity to Thailand and other attractions in Myanmar, has led to a consistent increase in tourist numbers, albeit often as part of wider tours of the country rather than visits to Hpa-An alone.

The Hpa-An Night Market has played a central role in the town's burgeoning tourism scene. The market is more than just a shopping venue; it's an immersive experience that gives a glimpse into the local lifestyle. The focus is on preserving the town's natural beauty and cultural sites, while ensuring that tourism development benefits local communities. This includes promoting eco-friendly practices and small-scale tourism ventures that do not disturb the serene environment.

The trend of digital-nomadism and long-term traveling has also brought a new type of visitor to Hpa-An, those looking for quiet and inspiring places to work remotely.

Impact of COVID-19

The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic inevitably had repercussions on the tourism industry in Hpa-An, as it did everywhere. Safety restrictions and travel bans led to temporary closures of tourist sites, including the Hpa-An Night Market, with a significant impact on the local economy. There has since been a gradual reopening with health and safety protocols in place to ensure the welfare of both tourists and residents.

As international travel resumes, Hpa-An and its night market are expected to regain popularity.
