Type of destination: Village
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Hunder is a small village located in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, India, known for its scenic beauty and unique attractions. Situated at an altitude of about 4,000 meters, Hunder lies between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges. The stark landscape here is a vast contrast with the white sand dunes, which are home to the double-humped Bactrian camels, remnants of the Silk Road trade era. These camels are an iconic symbol of Hunder and offer visitors the chance to experience camel rides through the dunes. The village is also recognized for its orchards, beautiful monasteries, and gompas that embody Buddhist culture. Hunder is adorned with vibrant prayer flags that flutter in the wind, adding vivid colors to the monochromatic desert hues. The Diskit Monastery, which is over a thousand years old, is a significant landmark nearby, featuring a tall statue of Maitreya Buddha that overlooks the valley. The serene environment, coupled with the sound of the Shyok River flowing, makes Hunder a tranquil retreat for travelers seeking solace and an authentic Ladakhi experience.
