The Imam Hussein Shrine is located in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, approximately 100km southwest of Baghdad. This shrine is one of the most sacred places for Shia Muslims as it marks the resting place of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed during the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The battle holds significant spiritual and historical importance and is commemorated annually in the Islamic month of Muharram, especially on the day of Ashura. The shrine complex is ornate with a gold-gilded dome, minarets, and a lavishly decorated interior housing the tomb of Imam Hussein. Millions of pilgrims from all around the globe visit the shrine annually, especially during Muharram and the 40-day period of mourning that follows Ashura, known as Arba'een. The shrine is not only a spiritual center but also a cultural and educational hub with libraries, museums, and a seminary within the complex.
