Ivolginsky Datsan, located near the city of Ulan-Ude in Buryatia, Russia, is the center of Buddhism in Russia. Founded in 1945, it is considered the most important Buddhist monastery in Russia. The Datsan is the residence of the Pandito Khambo Lama, the head of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia. The complex includes various temples, with the Tsogchen Dugan being the main temple, as well as a Buddhist university known as 'Dashi Choinkhorling' which educates monks. The architecture is vibrant and rich in colors, featuring traditional elements that draw visitors to its serene and spiritual environment. Notably, it houses the 'Hambo Lama Itigelov' - the body of the 12th Pandito Hambo Lama, which is remarkably well-preserved and has become a subject of scientific investigation. The site is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists and a fascinating cultural experience for non-Buddhists. Surrounded by the scenic views of the Siberian landscape, Ivolginsky Datsan offers insights into Buddhist philosophy, local art, and cultural practices.
