The Karagiye Depression is a significant geographic feature located near Aktau in Kazakhstan. It is one of the lowest and most impressive depressions in Central Asia, reaching around 132 meters below sea level at its deepest point. The Karagiye Depression spans a vast area and presents a dramatic and stark landscape. It is formed by the combination of geological processes including erosion and the dissolution of underground salt and limestone deposits, which contribute to the creation of its unique topography. This area is largely uninhabited and is characterized by its arid conditions, rocky terrain, sparse vegetation, and a variety of landforms such as cliffs, canyons, and hillocks. The site, while remote, is a draw for geologists and adventurers owing to its extreme natural environment and the rare opportunity to explore one of the lowest points on Earth's surface. The depression is also of interest for the study of climate change and earth sciences. Due to the harsh weather conditions and the lack of facilities, only those well-prepared for desert travel should attempt a visit.
