The Khammouane Provincial Museum itself may not have a specific history related to food, but it is located in Thakhek, a town known for its rich cultural diversity and history, which is reflected in its culinary traditions. Thakhek, situated along the Mekong River, has been influenced by neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand, as well as by French colonialism. This has given birth to a unique cuisine that blends local Lao flavors with Vietnamese, Thai, and French culinary techniques.

In the area around the museum, visitors can discover traditional Lao dishes that often feature fresh herbs, vegetables, and river fish, alongside sticky rice, which is a staple of Lao meals. Additionally, because of the region’s ethnically diverse communities, including indigenous groups like the Khmu and Hmong, there is a variety of traditional foods exclusive to these ethnicities.
