Khonoma Village is renowned as India's first green village and is located about 20 kilometers from the capital, Kohima, in Nagaland. This village is admired for its lush greenery and its focus on conservation of its natural resources and wildlife. It spans around 123 sq. km and is surrounded by rich forests and terraced fields carved out of the hilly terrain, which are cultivated using an ingenious form of agriculture that ensures both high biodiversity and sustainability. The village is inhabited by the Angami Tribe, which has a rich history and culture, particularly the practice of conservation. The Angami people's sustainable use of resources is embodied in their traditional agricultural practices, hunting restrictions, and community-based conservation measures. Also notable is the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS), aimed to protect the local biodiversity, including the endangered Blyth's Tragopan.
