Kur River, also known as Kura, is a major river in Azerbaijan, flowing through the city of Mingachevir. The river has significant historical, economic, and environmental importance in the region. It originates in Turkey and stretches across Georgia and Azerbaijan, ultimately draining into the Caspian Sea. It is the longest river in the South Caucasus, with a total length of approximately 1,515 kilometers. The Mingachevir Reservoir, created by a dam on the Kura river, is a key feature of the area and plays a crucial role in water supply, electricity generation, and irrigation activities. Surrounding the river, the landscape is marked by fertile plains that support agriculture, providing a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Mingachevir itself is one of Azerbaijan's prominent industrial and cultural centers, often referred to as the 'City of Lights' for its hydropower station, which once was the largest in the region. The river is also a popular site for fishing, boating, and riverside recreation, contributing to the city's tourism sector.
