Lawachara National Park is a major national park and nature reserve in northeastern Bangladesh located in the Sylhet division. Spanning approximately 1,250 hectares, it is one of the key sites for biodiversity in Bangladesh and was declared a national park in 1996. Lawachara is a mixed evergreen forest biotope with a variety of trees, shrubs, bamboo, vines, and herbs. It is home to a rich array of wildlife including the endangered hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, slow loris, and numerous bird species. The park is also notable for its community-based ecotourism initiated by the government and non-governmental organizations. The Khasi and Manipuri people, two of the indigenous communities living around the park, contribute to its unique cultural landscape. They practice betel leaf cultivation which intertwains with the local ecology. The main attractions include walking amidst the dense greenery, bird watching, observing the diverse flora and fauna, and experiencing the cultural heritage of the local indigenous communities. The park offers several well-marked trails for trekking and enjoys a somewhat humid subtropical climate with a notable monsoon season.
