The Edge of Civilisation
Longwa is noted for two things, the presence of old tatoo'd Head Hunters and its location on the border between India and Myanmar. You have to get permission to travel here at the local police / army check point and the Indian Army have a clear presence. It is fascinating place and you feel ike you have reached the edge of civilsation. There plenty of handicratfs being made and plenty to buy from the locals. You can visit the Angh's (Kings) House that straddles the border. They had all gone to market when visited but we could still wander in and take a look around. The locals are friendly and savvy of the few tourists that make it here. We aslo dropped into the last local gun maker for a look see. He was very accomodating. This is not a place you happen to come by, you have to make the effort to get here and it was worth the effort. Nearby Hongpoi Village is even better!

Longwa Village
A village shared by two countries! Angh's (The Konyak King) house is right in the middle of the international border. Without doubt Konyak warriors are the most fearsome brave fighters of their time.

Longwa village, the last "WILD EAST" frontier of India.
At 1300 hrs boarded "Deep Tours Bus" in Kohima which departed at 1315 hrs reaching Mon Town at 0600 hrs the next day. From Mon Town booked a shared taxi to Longwa village costing Rs 170 .After approximately 3 hrs reached the amazing village of Longwa.In Longwa we were a group of 4 tourists who stayed at "Longsha Homestay" which is a heritage Konyak hut belonging to the Wangnao family. Entrance of the Wangnao Konyak hut was decorated with Mithun(Local breed of buffalo) , buffalo and deer skulls while the interior had exotic carved wooden beam girders instead of concrete girders and wood carved beams with the entire hut covered with a thatched hay roof.Had a excellent 2 day's stay in Longwa.Opium smoking is common among the villagers and for the first time in my life got a taste of opium.In Nagaland the Baptist church branch of Christianity is the largest religious group in the State with entire Longwa villagers being Baptist Christians.Longwa is World famous for its former "HEAD HUNTER" konyak warriers of whom a few still survive and we were lucky to meet two of these former "Head Hunters" thanks to Mr Nakao.Wangnao of "Longsha Homestay" being our guide and interpreter. Head hunter "Manyam" at 89 years of age with 4 heads to his tally and his compatriot "Chopa" at 85 years of age with 3 heads to his tally seemed as if they were from a artificial "Movie set" with their tattooed face and chest.Its customary to offer the head hunter some money when meeting them.We also visited the "Angh Palace" of which half of the house lies in Myanmar and the other in India.Also visited " Border Pillar 155" on India - Myanmar Border.As a Indian myself having toured entire India and 77 Country's across the Globe was surprised on visiting Longwa very late in my travel itinerary.Please keep "LONGWA VILLAGE" in Nagaland State in India on your bucket list .

The last of the head hunters left which is a must see with their tattooed faces and tribal dress. Also must meet the Chief Ang who commands respect amongst his people ruling 33 villages in India and Mynamar

Last Head hunter's village
This is the only place you can see head hunters. Head hunting . i.e practice of killing a person from enemy tribe and hanging them in a common area of village was widely practiced in Naga tribes until 40 years back when most of them converted to Christianity due to the effort of missionaries and peace prevailed. The Head hunters wear necklaces indicating the number of heads cut by them and is a place of pride among the community. The also have tatoos in their body and head. We met two of them through our local guides. Longwa head (Angh) is the chief of numerous villages most of which are in Burma. The house itself is half inside India and half in Burma. Roads approaching Longwa as in most of Nagaland are terrible. So be prepared for a long and uneasy travel to reach there. Worth staying overnight in one of the several homestays in there.
