Maruyama Zoo is a zoological park located in the city of Sapporo, on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Opened in 1951, the zoo has been a popular destination for both locals and tourists, covering more than 22.5 hectares of land adjacent to Maruyama Park. It provides a home to a wide variety of species, ranging from native Japanese animals to exotic creatures from around the world. Notably, the zoo focuses on the breeding and conservation of rare species and has been successful in breeding animals such as the Amur leopard and the red-crowned crane, both of which are at significant risk in the wild. The zoo's setting in Maruyama Hill—adjacent to the primeval forest makes it unique, as it offers visitors a natural ambiance amidst the city. Features of the zoo include the Polar Bear Pavilion, the Ape House, the Children's Zoo, and the Walk-Through Aviary. The zoo also provides educational programs and interactive experiences, aiming to promote awareness about animal conservation.
