Matosavank Monastery is a hidden medieval monastery, nestled within the dense forests near the spa town of Dilijan in Armenia's Tavush region. Dating back to the 13th century, this small monastic complex is off the beaten path, often overshadowed by the more visited Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries nearby. Matosavank means 'the monastery of the precious' and is believed to have been built on the foundations of an ancient pagan site. The monastery comprises a single-nave hall church, a vestibule, and the remains of various khachkars (cross-stones) with intricate carvings. Overgrown with moss and surrounded by trees, it exudes an air of mystery and tranquility. The monastery was abandoned in the 17th century and has been partially ruined over time. Nevertheless, the surviving frescoes and inscriptions bear testimony to its once flourishing religious and cultural life. The seclusion of Matosavank offers visitors an intimate experience with nature and history, making it a perfect spot for contemplation and hiking enthusiasts.
loved the monastery in the forest, the hike was great, maybe the tourist department should add toilets on the way for people
