The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, built between 353 and 350 BC in the city of Halicarnassus, now known as Bodrum, Turkey. Although much is not known about specific foods related to the Mausoleum itself, Bodrum's cuisine has evolved through the influence of various civilizations that have inhabited the region. The Achaemenid Empire, which included the area of Halicarnassus, no doubt brought Persian influences to the local cuisine. Additionally, the proximity of Bodrum to the sea has meant that seafood has always been a staple of the local diet. Throughout history, Bodrum has seen the passage of Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, each leaving their culinary marks on the region.
