Arriving in Luang Prabang

• By Air: Fly into Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ). From there, you can take a taxi or tuk-tuk to the city center.
• By Bus: Luang Prabang can be reached by bus from other cities in Laos, such as Vientiane or Vang Vieng.
• By Boat: For a more scenic approach, consider a boat trip along the Mekong River from cities like Huay Xai near the Thai border.

Once in Luang Prabang

Mount Phousi is centrally located and is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the downtown area. If you're staying in a hotel in Luang Prabang, Mount Phousi is likely just a short walk away.

Climbing Mount Phousi

Mount Phousi is 150 meters above the town. To reach the summit, you can take one of two main staircases:

• The main entrance is at the end of Sisavangvong Road, facing the Royal Palace. This staircase is more popular and can get busy, especially at sunset.
• The other entrance is on the backside of the hill, near the Nam Khan river, known as the Phousi Marketplace entrance. This route is slightly less crowded.

Entrance tickets can be purchased at the foot of the hill. Be prepared for a steep climb, as both staircases consist of over 300 steps. Along the way, you will pass various shrines and statues and can explore the Wat Tham Phousi shrine midway up the hill.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Mount Phousi is early morning for sunrise or late afternoon in time to catch the sunset. Both offer spectacular views but be aware that it can be crowded during these peak times.

Wear comfortable shoes for the climb and remember to bring water. Modest dress is recommended as you will encounter religious sites along the way. Bringing a camera is highly recommended for the breathtaking views you'll experience from the top!
