Arriving in Timor-Leste

  • By Air: Your journey will likely start by flying into Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili, the capital city of Timor-Leste.
  • Depending on your starting point, you might have to catch connecting flights as direct flights to Dili are limited and usually operate from select locations in Asia and Australia.

Traveling from Dili to Mount Ramelau

  • By Car: The most convenient way to reach Mount Ramelau from Dili is by renting a car or hiring a taxi. The journey is approximately 70 kilometers and takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on road conditions.
  • You will head towards the south coast of the island through the towns of Maubisse and then to Ainaro. The mountain is well sign-posted from Ainaro.

Beginning the Climb

  • The town of Hato Bulico is commonly used as the base for climbing Mount Ramelau.
  • It's recommended to start the climb early in the morning to catch the sunrise from the summit. The climb takes approximately 3 hours. Prepare for a significant change in temperature as you ascend.
  • Guides: Although the path is straightforward, hiring a local guide can enrich your experience as they provide insights into the local culture and environment.
