Muang Khoun, located near Phonsavan in Laos, serves as a gateway to the history of the Xieng Khouang province and is especially known for its vestiges of the former Laotian kingdom. Once the provincial capital known as Xieng Khouang, it suffered extensive destruction during the Secret War of the 1960s, yet some ruins remain. Notable historical remnants include the Wat Phia Wat temple and That Foun stupa.
