Ideal visit duration: 1-3 hours
Nagasaki Chinatown, known as Shinchi Chinatown, is one of Japan's three major Chinatowns located in the city of Nagasaki. It is a vibrant district with a history stemming from the arrival of Chinese traders in the 15th century. During Nagasaki's period of international trade, this area flourished as a hub of cultural and economic activity. Today, Shinchi Chinatown is a popular tourist attraction, featuring a plethora of Chinese shops, restaurants, and annual festivals, such as the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, which celebrates the Chinese New Year. Visitors can indulge in authentic Chinese cuisine, including the famous Champon and Sara Udon noodles, which have been localized to fit Japanese taste preferences. The streets are lined with ornate gates called 'paifang', lanterns, and decorated archways that add to the unique atmosphere. While it is not the largest Chinatown in Japan, Nagasaki's Chinatown remains an integral piece of the city's heart and history, providing a colorful and tasteful experience reflective of the rich cultural exchange between Japan and China over the centuries.
