Type of destination: Salt Lake
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
The Najaf Sea, known locally as Bahr al-Najaf, is an expansive salt lake located in the Najaf province of Iraq. Despite its name, it is not a sea but rather a seasonal salt lake that covers an area of approximately 100 square miles, primarily consisting of salt flats and marshland. The presence of fluctuating water levels has created a unique ecosystem with significant geological formations, mainly comprising large salt crusts. This 'sea' has ancient origins and is surrounded by the vast desert landscape of the region. It is significant from the ecological perspective due to the special habitats it creates for local wildlife and vegetation adapted to the high salinity conditions. The Najaf Sea also holds cultural and historical importance as it is near the city of Najaf, which is a central site for the Shia Muslim community, containing the Imam Ali Shrine. The area is sparsely populated, with most residents living in small villages or towns that depend on traditional livelihoods such as salt extraction from the lake. The stark, white beauty of the salt formations contrasts with the blue sky, creating a serene and otherworldly landscape.
