Best Time To Visit Nijo Castle (Kyoto) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Nijo Castle, Kyoto, Japan

Spring (March to May) is arguably the most spectacular time to visit Nijo Castle in Kyoto due to the cherry blossom, or sakura, season. The castle grounds are adorned with over 400 cherry trees, which usually bloom in full spectacle between late March and early April. This time of year is marked by the traditional Japanese custom of 'hanami,' where locals and tourists alike picnic under the blooming trees to appreciate their fleeting beauty. The specific dates of the cherry blossoms vary slightly each year depending on the weather, so it is recommended to check local forecasts for the most accurate timing. Tourists should be aware that this is a peak season, hence it will be crowded and accommodation prices may be higher.

Fall (October to November) is another exquisite time to visit Nijo Castle when the autumn foliage creates a dramatic backdrop to the historic site. The viewing of autumn leaves, known as 'koyo,' sees the castle grounds transform with vivid reds, oranges, and yellows, particularly around the Seiryu-en garden. This provides a different yet equally enchanting experience compared to the spring. The castle is often less crowded during the fall as compared to the spring, and the weather is comfortably cool, making it ideal for exploring the outdoor attractions of the castle. Additionally, special evening illuminations often take place in autumn, giving visitors the chance to see the fall colors beautifully lit up at night.
