History of Tourism at the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke), Heidelberg

The Old Bridge, known in German as the Alte Brücke, has been an iconic landmark in the scenic city of Heidelberg, Germany, for centuries. Its history of attracting visitors can be traced back to its origins, with the earliest bridge on this location being recorded as early as the 13th century. This bridge has seen several reconstructions due to various reasons, including ice floes and war destruction.

The current structure, built of Neckar valley sandstone, dates from the 18th century and has since become one of the most photographed scenes in Germany. The bridge connects the Old Town to the eastern bank of the River Neckar and has witnessed countless travelers crossing its expanse, drawn by the beauty of its architecture and the stunning views of the Heidelberg Castle it affords.

Development of Bridge Tourism

Over the years, the Old Bridge has not only served its practical purpose but also became a must-visit attraction for those exploring Heidelberg. With the romantic era in the 19th century, the influx of poets, artists, and intellectuals to the city contributed to Heidelberg's allure, with many documenting the charm of the Alte Brücke in their works.
