Paldalmun Gate is one of the major gates of Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Suwon, South Korea. The gate serves as the southern entrance to the fortress, which was constructed from 1794 to 1796 during the reign of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. Paldalmun Gate consists of a large stone base and a two-story wooden pavilion atop it. Historically, the gatehouse was intended for military and observational purposes. Unique features of the gate include its hipped-and-gabled roof structure, and beautiful decorative elements. Its name, 'Paldal,' comes from the nearby Paldalsan Mountain. The gate has been witness to various historical events, including an invasion by French troops in 1866 and significant damage during the Korean War. It was later restored to its original form. Paldalmun is not just a historical site; it also functions as a lively area filled with markets and cultural activities. Visitors can walk along the Hwaseong Fortress walls starting at Paldalmun to explore the fortress's various components.
