How To Reach Panmunjom

Traveling to Panmunjom, Kaesong in North Korea

Panmunjom is located within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between South and North Korea and it is the site of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement. Visiting this historical site is only possible through an organized tour, as individual tourism in North Korea is not permitted.

From South Korea:

  • Book a tour with an authorized agency based in South Korea. These tours typically depart from Seoul and include a visit to Panmunjom as part of their itinerary in the DMZ.
  • Ensure you have the required documentation, as the agencies will need to submit your information to the United Nations Command for background checks in advance.
  • Be aware that tours might be canceled on short notice due to security considerations.

From North Korea:

  • Enter North Korea through a pre-arranged tour with a recognized travel agency that handles trips to the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea).
  • Most travelers will need to fly to Beijing, China, and then take a connecting flight to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
  • Once in Pyongyang, your travel agency will organize the trip to Kaesong and Panmunjom, where you’ll be able to visit the North Korean side of the DMZ under close supervision of government guides.
  • Your passport will be required when you book the tour and throughout your trip. It's also essential to obtain a North Korean visa, which is typically arranged by the travel agency.

General Travel Considerations:

  • The political situation on the Korean peninsula can affect travel to the DMZ significantly. Always check the current travel advisories and understand the risk involved.
  • Respect all local laws and regulations, and follow the instructions given by your tour guides strictly.
  • Photography is usually restricted and only allowed at specific spots designated by your guides.

Travel to Panmunjom and Kaesong requires careful planning and adherence to strict protocols. Whether you're approaching from the South or the North, the experience of visiting such a significant historical site will be both profound and educational.
