Welcome to Perm Local History Museum

Founded in 1870, the Perm Local History Museum is one of the oldest and most important cultural institutions in the Perm region of Russia. The museum’s history reflects the broader historical changes that have taken place in Perm and the surrounding areas over the past century and a half.

The Origins of Tourism at Perm Local History Museum

Tourism at the Perm Local History Museum began shortly after its establishment, with the museum initially serving the local population and a small number of Russian visitors interested in the region's history and culture. Its collections grew rapidly, encompassing a wide array of artifacts from the Ural region, including geological specimens, ethnographic objects, and historical documents.

The Soviet Era Expansion

During the Soviet era, the museum expanded significantly. It became an instrument for state ideology, showcasing the industrial progress and historical significance of the Perm region within the USSR. Tourism became more organized and was largely domestic, as international visitors to the Soviet Union were relatively rare and subject to strict controls.

Post-Soviet Developments

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the museum underwent a period of transformation, reflecting the newfound openness of Russian society. The 1990s and early 2000s saw an increase in international tourism as Russia opened its doors to visitors from around the world. The Perm Local History Museum capitalized on this trend, modernizing its exhibits and offering services in English and other languages.

Recent Trends in Tourism

In recent years, there has been a shift towards experiential and educational tourism, with visitors looking for more engaging and interactive experiences. The Perm Local History Museum has embraced this trend by using new technologies to create immersive displays and interactive exhibits.

Furthermore, there is an increasing interest in eco-tourism and cultural heritage, with travelers seeking to understand the history and natural beauty of their destinations in a sustainable manner. The Perm Local History Museum has adjusted its programming to include more information on the region's unique environment and cultural practices.

Adapting to the Digital Age

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of digital platforms, the Perm Local History Museum has expanded its online presence, offering virtual tours and digital access to its collections. This allows a global audience to explore the museum's offerings from the safety and comfort of their own homes.
