Piazza del Campo, known simply as Il Campo, is the principal public space of the historic center of Siena, Italy, and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It is renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. The square is shell-shaped, concave, and divided into nine sectors that symbolize the Council of Nine who ruled Siena during its medieval golden age. The piazza is dominated by the red Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, Torre del Mangia. Both the palace and the civic tower were built during the 13th-14th centuries. Piazza del Campo has been a central part of Sienese life for centuries and is the focal point of the Palio horse race, which is held twice each year. Visitors are charmed by its outdoor cafes, the stunning Palazzo Pubblico with frescoes, and the Mangia Tower, which provides an excellent vantage point over the city. The piazza's design and the Palio have been essential in the preservation of the medieval aspects of the town.
